They will deal with eve-teasing, molestation and adultery cases

In what is seen as a shot in the arm of the law enforcement to ensure women safety, women police teams titled ‘Shakthi’ were launched as part of ‘MahilalakuCheruvaga’ programme in the city on Thursday.

Launching the initiative, Director-General of Police R.P. Thakur said that ‘Shakthi’ teams would work to check crimes against women such as eve-teasing, molestation, bigamy, fraudulent marriage, adultery and work place harassment among others.

The 35-member ‘Shakthi’ teams comprising woman ASIs, head constables, police constables and home guards have been provided with two-wheelers and four-wheelers.

The vehicles have GPS trackers facility so that those can be tracked on a real-time basis.

Working schedule

“The Shakthi teams will work from morning to night (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.). The officials will be in direct contact with the police control rooms. They will be attending to the complaints received through the helpline services such as ‘Dial 100’ and 1090. The team members will reach out to the victims as quickly as possible,” the DGP told the media here.

Mr. Thakur also suggested that the City Police expanded the service timings of the ‘Shakthi’ teams, making them available even late in the night, keeping in view of the women who work in the late shifts at their workplaces.

The DGP also said that the team would conduct interactive sessions with girl students, working women and create awareness on sense of safety and security, apart from knowing their grievances and redress those as per law.

Salient features

The ‘Shakthi’ team will have new designed navy blue uniform.

The vehicles are equipped with VHF sets, man-pack, tabs for GPS tracking facilities and pepper sprays.
