Tirupati is a city in Chittoor district of the state of Andhra Pradesh which is famous for Venkateswara Swamy temple dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, located about 20 kilometres North West of Tirupati in the Tirumala hills at an elevation of 853 metres (2,799 ft).
One of the most important pilgrimage centers in the world, the temple draws millions of pilgrims and is the busiest pilgrimage center in the world.
There is no clear history on the origin of the temple of Lord Venkateshwara, but it was maintained and upgraded by various kingdoms. These include the Pallava Kingdom, Chola Kingdom and the latest one being Vijayanagara Empire. It was during the rule of Vijayanagara Empire that the temple received increased contributions.
It is a municipal corporation and the headquarters of Tirupati Urban Mandal and Tirupati is a revenue division.
Tirupati is considered one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites because of Sri Venkateswara Temple, Tirumala, besides other historical temples in and around Tirupati and is referred to as the "Spiritual Capital of Andhra Pradesh".
Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India, New Delhi, named Tirupati as the "Best Heritage City". Tirupati has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a Smart City under Smart Cities Mission by Government of India.
Places to Visit at Tirupati Venkateswara Temple is a famous Vedic temple in the hill town of Tirumala. The temple is visited by about 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims daily (30 to 40 million people annually on average), while on special occasions and festivals, like the annual Brahmotsavam, the number of pilgrims shoots up to 500,000, making it the most-visited holy place in the world.
Other Notable Places Chandragiri Fort and archaeological museum, Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park SV Zoological park is the Second largest zoo park in Asia. Regional Science Center and planetarium, Jungle Book near Kapila Theertham are the other attractions. Alamelu Mangapuram Temple, Padmavathi Ammavari Temple, Govindaraja Swamy Temple, Kapila Theertham, ISKCON.
During the year 2010, Tirumala, Tirupati and Srikalahasti Sub-divisions are tagged together and formed as Urban Police District, Tirupati G.O.Ms. No. 137 Dated: 8-6-2010 of the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
The world's richest religious income temple is the abode of Lord Venkateswara located at Tirumala and there are other TTD temples Sri Padamavathi Ammavari temple at Thiruchanur, Sri Kalyana Venkateswara swamy temple at Srinivasa Mangapuram, Sri Govindaraja swamy temple, Sri Kapileswara swamy temple, Sri Kodandaramaswamy temple in Tirupati. There is another temple of Lord Sri Krishna founded by ISKCON is also at Tirupati. All these are famous temples in Chittoor district attracting lakh of devotees every day from all over the world.
Urban Police District, Tirupati is having main Rail, Road and airway connecting points. Tirupati Airport is located at Renigunta which is also a railway junction from Guntakal, Gudur, Chennai and Bangalore.
The district by and large is peaceful and is free from faction. The District is politically sensitive with number of parties having dedicated cadre with them. Further, Universities and number of professional colleges are existing in this area. Red Sanders smuggling is rampant in the District and connected inter districts/states. Providing day to day bandobust at Tirumala for facilitating darshan to common pilgrims, providing fool proof security and protocol to the VIPs visiting Tirumala, providing bandobust on large scale during festive occasions for preventing stampede etc, anti-sabotage checks for prevention of Terror attacks etc are regular day to day phenomena in this District. Any small lapse on these counts will lead to chaos. And hence, the entire police force needs to be high alert throughout the clock.
Urban Police District, Tirupati consist of 25 police Stations ( One Airport PS is not yet established), 2 Circles, 7 Sub-Divisions with 1 SP, 4 Addl.Ss.P., 17 DSsP, 24 Inspectors of Police, 90 SIs, 81 ASIs, 223 HCs and 1056 PCs in Civil and 1 DSP, 4 RIs, 12 RSIs, 33 ARSIs, 99 ARHCs and 429 ARPCs for Armed Reserve Force as sanctioned Strength.
